Gear Lists

We've covered the different types of gear, and you've had a chance to organize your gear into those types.  Its almost time to start making gear lists.  First, though, some more basic concepts.

Some backpackers have a standard set of gear they use every time out.  Depending on where you hike, and the gear you use, this strategy may or may not work out for you.  If you have to deal with a wide range of temperatures or weather conditions, you're probably going to have gear lists customized to fit the weather.  So, the first thing to do when making a gear list is to consider the season.

Much of the gear available today is rated for three seasons, meaning it is best used during the spring, summer, and fall.  This gear is intended for moderate weather, and probably shouldn't be used when it is very cold.  If you are making a gear list for a winter trip, you will need four season gear.  These items are intended for year round usage.  They are usually more durable, heavier, and more expensive.  Using the appropriate gear for the season can help you save space and weight.

All of that said, here's a very generic sample gear list.  After entering their gear, registered users can create their own printable gear lists similar to this sample.  Once you create a gear list, you can print it out and use it to make sure you don't forget anything when you are packing.
